the headlice problem
Speak with any parent of school age children and you will quickly begin to understand the ongoing problem that New Zealand families face with head lice. Numerous hair washing sessions, products that don't work, family members becoming infested, and the frustration of finding that after weeks of treatment, a child has become re-infested after a sleep over.
Schools do not give people head lice; people bring head lice to schools. Head lice are also brought to churches, supermarkets, sports fields and homes by people so head lice are a community wide problem. A population is likely to host head lice most of the time. Infestation levels fluctuate for no apparent reason and sometimes head lice appear to be epidemic while at other times they appear to be absent.
"Parents desperate to rid their children of head lice are resorting to animal flea treatments available over the counter from vets".
NZ Herald 27/06/05
The current information provided by the Ministry of Health to New Zealand schools and parents clearly suggests using insecticide to treat head lice - this is no longer necessary and in fact could cause permanent damage! "You need a special shampoo or lotion (containing insecticide) available only from your chemist or doctor to kill both the lice and eggs". (MOH pamphlet 'Head lice facts' revised May 2006 code 4189)
